Motivating and Challenging Young Learners

Dear All,

In the light of the class discussions, I believe that it'd be very useful for everyone if you posted the techniques and straetegies you observed in your classrooms at the practice school over here.

So, what are some of the effective and useful techniques and strategies to motivate and challenge young learners and maintain the discipline at the same time ?

Let's share all we have observed and liked so far.

I think that exploring the students' lives will provide us with lots of information like their interest areas, likes and dislikes, plans, etc. If we know that one of our students is interested in an issue or topic, then we can get help from him when we observe such a need in our class. ı know that it is really encouraging on the part of the student because he realizes that his valuable contribution makes a difference.

I think the most important and effective way to motive the students is to make them aware of how they are going to benefit from what they are learning. As long as the lessons and activities are meaningful for them, they will be motivated towards the lessons. If the activities are enjoyable as well, they will always want to take part in the activities I think.

if ı am not mistaken, our mentor teacher said to a student whose voice is so low "talk like an American" meaning loudly. until the student produce the sentence loudly she repeated the expression. i think it worked on the part of this student so it can be useful for such whispering students.

some students are really eager to learn a language but not all. it is the teacher who will encourage the learners to learn a new language.
the teacher may start doing do by explaning why students should know english.
and I think there is not jusn one way of motivating the students. every student have diffirent needs so the teacher should consider personal differences as well.
another thing is that şf the students feel they achieve somethingi they will be automotically motivaated.
and if the teacher seems enthisiastic about the subject so will the students.
sometimes students are motivated to talk about their real life. teacher can give a chance to all of them to talk about their lifes.
an so on..
